Chapter 19
THE HOLY SPIRIT IN
JOB
THE LIFE-GIVING SPIRITâJob 33:4
The Holy Spirit sustains all life.
I was ministering in Northern California at one of my ministry miracle services. In the front row sat a Hindu family that had been invited by one of their family members who had converted to Christianity. Hearing that there were miracles taking place, the family came to receive the healing touch of God.
The father was in a wheelchair, and it was his son, the Christian, who had brought him. They didnât understand most of what I preached. They didnât even really understand English. But when the power of God started to flow, they became very attentive.
After praying with several others who needed healing, I finally went to pray for the Hindu family. The man in the wheelchair was healed and began to walk. The people there began to praise God for the miracle, and the Hindu family received Christ.
Iâve often seen the Lord heal nonbelievers. For some reason, that surprises Christians, but let me take this even further. The goodness of God touches all. God doesnât just heal the nonbeliever; He sustains the very life of the nonbeliever.
You see, every living being is sustained by the power of the Holy Spirit. He has power over everything and love for all.
In the Book of Job, the Holy Spirit is revealed as the breath of life and the Creator of man:
For the Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life (Job 33:4).
The Book of Job records the testing of a man who lost everythingâhis family, his health, his riches. It causes us to reflect upon the tired question, âWhy does God allow tragedy and evil?â But this revelation about the Holy Spirit doesnât have to do with the overall narrative of Jobâit is simply a hidden treasure of wisdom about the Holy Spirit. I suppose that if one were to desire a more thematic âtie-in,â one could say this: Who are we to question the living God? Our very breath with which we question His wisdom is sustained by His Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit doesnât just empower the believer; He sustains the life of the sinner. The very breath with which many curse and mock the Holy Spirit is given by the Holy Spirit. All of creation, every life, every breath is graced by the Holy Spirit.1
Every living being on this earth is sustained by the breath of life that was breathed in the beginning (see Gen. 2:7).
He does not dwell in every person as He dwells in the believer, but His work, the sustaining of life itself, touches all. The Holy Spirit is truly merciful and powerful. He truly is the life-giving Spirit.
